To calm down the demonstration, the government framed an innocent person as the murderer of Nirmala and tortured him.

The government formed a half-a-dozen probe committees, took statement from 529 individuals. DNA test was conducted on a total of 73 people but the real culprit is still at large even after a year of the heinous crime. It has raised doubts over the efficiency of the security agencies.
