Priti Patel, first Indian-origin, appointed Britain’s Home Secretary

LONDON: Priti Patel is the die-hard supporter of Boris Johnson and has campaigned for his candidacy to the Prime Minister within the Conservative Party. She is also the ardent supporter of Brexit – exit of Britain from EU (European Union). Being a fierce critic of Theresa May, Priti Patel took charge as Britain’s first Indian-origin Home Secretary in the newly-unveiled Boris Johnson Cabinet on Wednesday.

She had been a prominent member of the ‘Back Boris’ campaign within and outside the conservative party for the post of Prime Minister of Britain. ”It is important that Cabinet should represent modern Britain as well as a modern Conservative Party’, she said, just hours before her appointment was announced.

The 47-year-old was first elected as a Conservative MP for William in Essex in 2010 and gained prominence in the then David Cameron led Tory government as his Indian Diaspora Champion. (Agencies)
