DOLPA: Closed Circuit (CC) cameras have been installed at several alpine meadows in Dolpa district for wildlife conservation and census.
Fifty cameras have been installed at the alpine meadows at Jagadulla Rural Municipality and other meadows for the purpose in Dolpa — the largest district in Nepal’s mountainous region.
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has extended financial support to install CCTV.
CCTV cameras have been installed mostly in places inhabited by snow leopards such as Tangtunge, Kagmara, Bhitri Puduwa, Bahiri Puduwa, Thuli Palti, Antar Puduwa, and Jagadulla, among other places, according to the Shey Phoksundo National Park, the largest wildlife sanctuary in the country.
It said that they have counted three thousand blue sheep of late with the help of CCTV cameras.
The installation of CC cameras is also expected to control poaching activities.
The Shey Phoksundo National Park, which is spread in Dolpa and partly in Mugu, is home to 200 species of birds including the Lophophorus, pheasants, eagles, etc, six species of reptiles and 32 species of butterflies, besides other wild animals such as the snow leopard.
