Nepal sends 200 MW electricity to India

KATHMANDU: The government has begun the practice of energy banking by supplying 200 MW electricity to India in view of the shutdown of various facilities owing to floods and inundation in Nepal.

The demand for electricity supply declined heavily because of the rain-caused disasters. Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Barsha Man Pun, said, “On July 12, 13, and 14, we provided 150 MW electricity to India, while 200 MW on the night of July 15. Such practice was implemented as per the Power Trade Agreement between Nepal and India and the energy banking concept.”

The demand for energy sharply declined especially in State 1 and 2 due to torrential rain. Nepal’s current demand for electricity is a total of 1215 MW. The demand declined to 600 MW with the floods and inundation, which however rose to 1125 MW on Monday.

Minister Pun informed that the surplus energy was sent to India for is utilization as per the agreement. The energy supply on Rakxaul-Parwanipur Interstate Transmission Line and Kushaha-Kataiya Interstate Transmission Line were supplied to the southern neighbor.
