HONG KONG: Following a serious of protests, the Hong Kong government has finally delayed the controversial Extradition Bill, local media reported.
If the Bill were endorsed, criminals would be extradited to the mainland of China. Hundreds of thousands of people protested against the Bill saying that if the it were endorsed it would expose people in Hong Kong to China’s deeply flawed justice system.
Chief Executive Carrie Lam is likely to reconsider the bill after a number of advisers urged her to suspend it. Lam is expected to hold a press conference on Saturday afternoon.
The government has argued the proposed extradition bill will “plug the loopholes” so that the city would not be a safe haven for criminals.
