Parliamentary committee recommends 60 years of retirement age for civil servants

KATHMANDU: Agreement has been reached in the parliamentary committee to increase the maximum age of compulsory retirement of employees in the civil service from 58 to 60, following long debate and discussions.

The House of Representatives’ State Affairs and Good Governance Committee, at its meeting today, reached to a consensus on the proposal on increasing the maximum age for retirement, taking into consideration the increase in the average age of the Nepalis, the age bar for retirement remaining above 58 years in the judicial, health and teacher services and the international practice as well.

More discussions would be held on the draft of the bill after the committee passes all the articles of the draft proposal of the ‘Bill Designed to Provide for the Formation, Operation and Conditions of Service of the Federal Civil Service’ and sends it to the Federal Parliament. The bill is currently under consideration of the committee.

The bill will take the form of an Act after it is passed by both houses of parliament and certified by the President. The Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration, however, had wanted to retain the present maximum age for compulsory retirement from civil service.
