Washington announces rule limiting legal immigration

WASHINGTON: The Trump administration has released a regulation that could cut the number of legal immigrants who were allowed to enter or stay in the US. This could make it easier to reject green card or visa applications.

This means that several green cards and visa applicants could be turned down if the applicants have low incomes or little education. This could also affect those who have used benefits including food stamps, Medicaid, and housing vouchers.

The new rule would encourage ‘self-reliance and self-sufficiency’ for people seeking to enter or stay in the United States, according to Ken Cuccinelli, Acting US Citizenship and Immigration Services Director.

Now that the new rule could make it harder for low-income immigrants to come or stay in the US.

The rule, which is targeted to people seeking to enter or stay in the United States through legal means is likely to affect around 382,000 people seeking to adjust their immigration.

The rule, however, doesn’t impact asylum seekers or refugees. (Agencies)
