Students crush stones for study

JAJARKOT: The government has made basic level of school free and compulsory. But the students of Jagat Basic School based in Barekot Rural Municipality-4, Maina, are forced to crush stones to meet study expenses on the school premises.

The students, who are from poor families, crush stones before and after school time. They will get Rs 120 if they crush a sack of stones.

“We can crush four sacks of stones in the morning and  evening,” said Pushpa Basnet, a sixth grader. “I will spend this money on education materials such as exercise books and pens for me and my younger brother and sister.”
