KATHMANDU: Menstruating students in remote Humla district are still forced to stay away from school due to lack of toilets and sufficient water.
They have to abstain from school for four days a month. At this rate, they will have to remain absent for 48 days annually, a report in Rajdhani daily said.
A total of 318 students are there at Dharmodaya High School in Tanjakot of Humla district, of which 192 are girls. Female students from class six and above menstruate once a month. According to a teacher they do not come to school for four days during menstruation since they do not feel comfortable during this period.
Despite the government’s policy to distribute sanitary pads in free of cost to menstruating students, students in Humla are still deprived of this facilities.
Female girls say they abstain from school due to lack of sanitary pads. One of the reasons why female students is weaker compared to boys is attributed to it, said Ganga Datta Joshi, principal of the school.
