Phurba chased his dreams for the right reason

KATHMANDU: Phurba Thiley Sherpa, following the footprint of his brothers of climbing the mountains, has found his future in the mountains.

Earlier, record-holder brothers Pemba Dorjee Sherpa, Phurba Tenjing Sherpa along with Pemba Gyalzen Sherpa, Phurba Thundu Sherpa, Nima Gyalzen Sherpa have been making their career as a full-time mountaineer.

After appearing in School Leaving Certificate Examination in 2013, he had to wait 3 months to get his result. Looking at the economic condition of his family, he thought he had to earn something for his higher studies and for the family.

His brothers did not want him to be a mountaineer. They were not willing to let him debut in mountaineering, but he got a strong hold for his interest in 2013 when his brother Phurba ran a group for the Everest expedition.

They allowed him to be a kitchen helper for that expedition. But, it was his luck, they needed some high altitude porters to carry the expedition gear to upper camp. He got a chance to go above the Base Camp and reached Camp 3.

“I wanted to assent the summit in the first attempt, but, I had to come back with the guest, who could not go further due to sickness”, he added sadly.

Sherpa’s dream was to scale the summit at least once in his life and in 2017 he fulfilled it.

“I see the heaven without dying”, he said when he atop the summit.  Then, after he successfully climbed the Mt Everest in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

He finds a vast difference between Nepal and Europe in the mountaineering sector: the rules are systematic and have to be followed by everyone climbing the Mountains.

“In European mountains, iron ropes are fixed permanently and weather prediction is almost perfect,” Sherpa told Khabarhub, “Similarly if something happens while doing the expedition, they pay down for the sorry, or discount the service amount. They have a high-quality professional service.”

He has bitter experiences that the climbers who climbed successfully with the help of Sherpa, forget their hard works soon.

Similarly, Sherpa is equally concerned about global warming impacts as they are persistently changing in the mountains. He has felt that the level of snow has been diminishing each year in Everest since his vigilance towards it from 2013.

A person nurtured by the hills and mountains of Nepal, though now in Austria, Sherpa is optimistic about getting future opportunities to scale more peaks here.

When he came to his homeland from Austria, he had a bitter experience at the help desk at Tribhuvan International Airport. A person used to the foreign international airports, when he arrived at TIA he was shocked to see the empty desks while the tourists were waiting to enter for a long time.

Adding that working out for a more informative and well equipped help desk and travel desk has to be set up with a wider vision and broader perspective, this young mountaineer concluded, “If we want to make the Visit Nepal 2020 a grand success, special attention has to be paid to such issues which may seem trifle yet have dire consequences as they are the things to impact as first impressions to the visitors.”
