KATHMANDU: The price of the egg has gone up by Rs 80 per crate. With the increased price, a crate of big eggs will now cost Rs 280. Previously, a crate of eggs cost Rs 200.

Likewise, the price of small eggs per crate has gone up from Rs 115 to Rs 230 per crate. Despite the hike in the price, poultry farmers have complained that they do not get their operation cost.

Trilochan Kandel, President of Nepal Egg Producers Association, said that a farmer’s overhead cost comes to around Rs 10 per egg and that the cost of egg comes to around Rs 8.50 per unit even after the adjustment of the increased price.

According to Kandel, around four million eggs are produced every day at present. He informed that farmers have stopped producing chicks which is likely to decrease the production of eggs.

Around seven thousand farmers are engaged in poultry farming.
