WASHINGTON: American President Donald Trump said a new nuclear treaty should be signed by both Russia and China.

Turmp’s comments came amid growing fears of a new arms race that cropped up after the US withdrew from a key nuclear treaty with Russia.

Trump said he had alrady spoken to the two countries regarding the idea, and that they were both “very, very excited”.

The Cold War-era Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty banned missiles with ranges of 500-5,500 km.

The US withdrawal on Friday followed accusations by Washington that Russia had violated the pact by deploying a new type of cruise missile. Moscow has denied this.
