KATHMANDU: Prime Minister (PM) KP Oli has stated that taking an oath under the constitution and then declaring non-acceptance of it in Parliament would be a sign of dishonesty.
In his address at the inaugural session of the first series of ‘Himalayan Dialogue,’ organized by Foreign Affairs Media today, Prime Minister Oli emphasized that Nepal has lagged in development due to feudal governance.
He assured that efforts are being made to advance the country’s development and good governance amid the widespread public expectations following the political changes.
“The defeated feudalism hasn’t stopped trying to make a comeback. They have been asking me to support them,” he said, targeting monarchists. “Taking an oath in Parliament and then rejecting the constitution shows a lack of honesty. This only prolongs the transition period.”
On the issue of the protesting teachers, Prime Minister Oli said, “We listen when people bring legitimate demands. No one should suffer on the streets. Teachers should not sit on the streets. We will address their demands appropriately through dialogue.”
Prime Minister Oli also mentioned that Nepal is safeguarding its independence, self-respect, and national interests, fulfilling its obligations through international relations.
He highlighted the role of Nepal’s mountains in protecting the region and the world from desertification by blocking the hot air from the Bay of Bengal and regulating the sea’s temperature.
“Our country is geographically, naturally, and culturally diverse. Unity is essential amidst diversity. Without unity, we cannot achieve the goals we aspire to,” he said.
“Diversity is not a curse; it should be an asset. When national and international challenges arise, Nepal must unite and work toward solutions.”
He further emphasized that in a world where ideals are weakening and self-interest is growing, Nepal must contribute to global security and human welfare while prioritizing national interests.
“We should not cover our weaknesses under the guise of geopolitics,” he added. “It is necessary to advance national interests with geopolitical awareness.”
PM Oli made it clear that Nepal does not seek to abandon its national interests for international accountability. “We will not engage in collusion politics or favor one neighbor over another. We will not join any strategic alliances. We stand for peace,” he affirmed.
