Lactation corner to be set up at all 753 local levels

KATHMANDU: The government is going to implement the provision of a mandatory arrangement of lactation room by local levels and state-level offices at their own building.

The Ministry of Health and Population is making preparation to request all 753 local levels and state-level offices to establish lactation room to implement the provision of the Reproductive Health Act.

A lactation room was established at the premises of the Department of Health Services under the Ministry on Shrawan 16 last year.

At a program organized here today on the occasion of Breastfeeding Week-2076, Chief of Nutrition Branch of Family Health Division, Kedar Parajuli said that the ministry is requesting all local levels to establish lactation room in order to implement Reproductive Health Act.

The Act has the mandatory provision of lactation room in government buildings. Subordinate bodies of the Health Ministry, as well as hospitals, have started setting up lactation room in the recent period.

New Baneshwor-based Parliament House and Singha Durbar-based Secretariat building even have no lactation corner. An arrangement of a separate room was made for women lawmakers in first and second constituent Assembly for the same.

However, lactation corners have been established at domestic and international terminals of the Tribhuvan International Airport, but it has not been fully utilized as it has not been established at a convenient place.

This year’s Breastfeeding Week is being celebrated under the slogan ‘Empower Parents, Enable Breastfeeding’.

On the occasion, Director General of the Department of Health Services, Dr. Sushilnath Pyakurel, Chief of Family Welfare Division, Dr. Bhim Singh Tinkari, briefed about the importance of breastfeeding.
