Nepal to celebrate International Youth Day for a week



KATHMANDU: This year’s International Youth Day is going to be celebrated for a week. The International Youth Day, which falls on August 12, is to be jointly celebrated by Ministry of Youth and Sports and National Youth Council.

The Day is going to be celebrated under the international theme ‘Transforming education’ while ‘Transforming education for entrepreneurship and innovation’ is the local theme.

Vice-Chair of Council, Madhav Dhungel, said that the slogan of the country has been determined with an objective of linking youths with a national goal by promoting entrepreneurship, self-employment and innovation as well as transforming education through quality and professional education.

A 201-member main ceremony committee has been formed under the coordination of Minister for Youth and Sports, Jagat Bahadur Sunar (Bishwokarma) and 17-member Secretariat under the coordination of Vice-Chair Dhungel to make the Day successful.

The Day would be celebrated on August 12 at Nepal Academy by organizing various program where Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli would be the chief guest, said Council’s Information Officer, Dhurba Raj Poudel.

Different programs including the announcement of Prime Minister Intelligent Award and its distribution, youth dialogue program, different cultural program, Bagmati clean-up program, and dialogue program regarding youth’s condition, possibility and opportunity in radio and television would be organized to mark International Youth Day.

August 12 was first designated International Youth Day by the UN General Assembly in 1999 and it is being celebrated across the world since 2000. Nepal has started celebrating the Day since 2004.

As per the national census of 2068 BS, of the total population of Nepal, there are 40.3 percent youths.
