KATHMANDU: Nepal’s spring mountaineering season has officially come to an end, with 1,195 climbers from Nepal and abroad receiving permits to scale 31 mountains, including Sagarmatha (Mount Everest), the highest peak in the world.
Data from the Department of Tourism shows that 495 climbers from 56 countries obtained permits to climb Mount Everest. Of them, 390 were men and 105 were women, while 44 permit holders were Nepali nationals.
In addition to the climbers, over 1,000 guides and support personnel also successfully reached the summit during the season.
According to the Department, China accounted for the largest number of Everest climbers with 159 permit holders, followed by the United States with 152, India with 101, Germany with 75, the United Kingdom with 74, and Russia with 70.
The season also witnessed notable achievements by veteran climbers. Nepali mountaineer Kami Rita Sherpa strengthened his world record by reaching the Everest summit for the 32nd time. Similarly, Lhakpa Sherpa set a new record among female climbers after completing her 11th successful ascent of the mountain.
The government earned Rs 1.26 billion in climbing royalties during the spring season, with Mount Everest contributing the majority of the revenue.
