House panel instructs to complete Melamchi Project within this fiscal year



KATHMANDU: The Development and Technology Committee has directed the government to complete the Melamchi Drinking Water Project within the end of the current fiscal year 2019/020.

A meeting of the Committee held on Monday asked the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation to ensure the drinking water in Kathmandu Valley by completing the works within the deadline as per the latest agreement.

The Committee also directed the Ministry to submit a report of a panel formed under the joint-secretary of the Ministry to address the problem of the supplier.

Similarly, the concerned ministries have been asked to develop physical infrastructures like road and drinking water at the project construction site.

On the occasion, Committee President Kalyani Kumari Khadka said that the Committee was ready to provide necessary supports to the Melamchi Drinking Water Development Board to complete the project soon.

Similarly, former minister Sher Bahadur Tamang stressed that the government should help in infrastructure development like road, drinking water and electricity at project affected area.

Likewise, Committee members Ganesh Kumar Pahadi and Bina Kumari Shrestha urged the project to complete the construction works on time.

Meanwhile, Minister for Water Resources and Sanitation, Bina Magar, said that the Drinking Water and Sanitation Act would clear many things related to the drinking water.

At a national seminar organized by Federation of Drinking Water and Sanitation Users Nepal here on Monday, Minister Magar said that the problems of drinking water would be resolved once the Act related to the drinking water and sanitation comes into force.

She said that the government has been making plans related to sanitation in all three levels. Minister Magar said that she has been asking for information about the households and communities having no access to drinking water facilities.
