Will Samajbadi withdraw support to Oli government?

KATHMANDU: A day after quitting the government, the Samajbadi Party Nepal (SPN) is busy charting out its future course of action.

The party is holding its central committee meeting in Kathmandu on Wednesday to decide whether it should withdraw its support to the K P Oli-led government or should extend its support from outside.

If the party vice-chairman Rakam Chemjong’s views are to be considered, today’s meeting will decide the party’s future course of action.

“We joined the government with the assurance of constitution amendment and addressing the grievances of the people of Madhes and other disgruntled communities,” Chemjong said justifying the party’s move of quitting the government. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Upendra Yadav tendered his resignation on Tuesday citing dissatisfaction over Prime Minister Oli’s lack of responsiveness towards the party’s demands.

The Samajbadi Party Nepal, which had joined the government in June 2018 following a two-point agreement, is making a formal announcement on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Oli-government will lose its two-thirds majority if SPN withdraws its support. However, the government will have a sizable majority as the ruling Nepal Communist Party will still have 177 lawmakers in the House of Representatives in its favor even if 17 SPN lawmakers withdrew their support.
