Regmi says national unity, prosperity should guide Nepal

KATHMANDU: Former Chairman of the Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi has said that national unity and collective efforts toward development and prosperity, even in difficult circumstances, should remain Nepal’s national goal and constitutional roadmap.

Extending his greetings on Constitution Day 2083 BS, Regmi said the Constitution should be promoted and strengthened in line with the changing needs of the country.

Regmi recalled that the Nepali people succeeded in promulgating their own Constitution through the Constituent Assembly in 2072 BS, describing it as a major achievement resulting from years of struggle and various people’s movements.

Referring to Nepal’s vulnerability to earthquakes, floods, landslides and the impacts of climate change, Regmi said the country should use Constitution Day as an opportunity to strengthen national unity and preparedness to confront natural disasters.

Expressing grief over the loss of lives and property caused by the recent Bhotekoshi floods, Regmi said reports of thousands of people going missing had shocked the nation.

“This time, the Rasuwa flood was not caused by excessive rainfall but by an avalanche and is considered an impact of climate change,” Regmi said. “Our capacity to cope with such disasters and bear the resulting losses is inadequate. That is why we need climate justice and compensation.”

Regmi said international cooperation has become essential for Nepal to secure climate justice and stressed that the United Nations should play a significant role in addressing the issue.

He also emphasized the need for Nepal to strengthen its own institutional capacity and preparedness to respond to natural disasters and minimize their impact in the long term.
