KMC seeks NAC building for multi-storey parking facility

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has requested the federal government to hand over the Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) building at New Road for conversion into a multi-storey parking facility to ease the chronic shortage of parking space in the city’s core area.

Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol made the proposal while addressing a programme organised to mark the 34th founding anniversary of the Metropolitan Police Force.

Dangol said the metropolis has formally approached the federal government seeking permission to use the NAC building for a multi-level parking facility. She said the proposed project could provide a long-term solution to the persistent parking problem in the New Road and surrounding areas.

“We have made a special request to the federal government to allow us to convert the NAC building at New Road into a multi-storey parking facility. Once implemented, the project would help address the parking shortage in the city’s core area,” Dangol said.

She added that KMC is also carrying out a comprehensive study to identify sustainable ways to manage parking across the capital. The metropolitan government plans to develop and implement measures based on recommendations from a team of experts.

Dangol said the metropolis is prepared to move ahead with the proposed parking project once the necessary approval is obtained from the federal government.
