No one will dare fire a gun at people again, says Home Minister Gurung

KATHMANDU: Home Minister Sudan Gurung has said no one will now dare to open fire on the people in the country.

Addressing a Gen-Z Martyrs’ Day programme held at the old Parliament building in New Baneshwor, Gurung claimed that no one would have the courage to fire at citizens again.

Gurung said the Bhadra 23 movement was not driven by a desire for power or position but by the goal of establishing good governance in the country. Making strong remarks against the old political parties, he warned against attempts to rewrite history or disrespect the people’s movement. Saying the change was made possible by the mandate and sacrifices of three crore Nepalis, he urged the traditional parties to reform their thinking and working methods.

Saying he views his position not as a source of authority or pride but as a major responsibility entrusted to him by the people, Gurung pledged never to let the hopes of martyrs’ families and those injured in the movement fade. He also said he would uphold the trust placed in him by Prime Minister Balendra Shah and party chair Rabi Lamichhane. He warned that the government would pursue a zero-tolerance policy against corruption and that he would personally stand with the people if even a single rupee of corruption were found.

Speaking at the programme, Gurung said the practice of using security agencies such as the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and Nepali Army for political interests had been ended. Accusing previous governments of treating security personnel unfairly, he claimed the current government had created an environment for them to serve the people impartially and independently.
