KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Balendra Shah (Balen) has expressed grief over the Sunsari incident and urged everyone to exercise restraint.
In a Facebook post published at midnight, Shah said the incident had divided society and created an atmosphere in which people are afraid to face one another. He said he was deeply saddened not only as the Prime Minister but also as a citizen of the country.
“I have felt the pain of the families who lost their loved ones in the Sunsari incident,” he wrote. “The government will provide justice and compensation as soon as possible. I assure you that those responsible will be brought to justice in accordance with the law so that such incidents do not happen again.”
Shah said the incident stemmed from emotional hurt and social tension, adding that such a situation should not be considered normal.
“I know that emotional pain is not normal. What began as an ordinary dispute in Sunsari escalated when people became angry over something that hurt their feelings, eventually leading to the loss of lives,” he said. “Society has become divided, and people are afraid to face one another. This is not a situation that anyone with humanity would wish for.”
He paid heartfelt tribute to those who lost their lives and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
“Not only as the Prime Minister, but also as a citizen of this country, I am saddened by the events in Sunsari. I pay my heartfelt tribute to the deceased and wish the injured a speedy recovery,” he said.
The Prime Minister reiterated that the government would provide justice and compensation to the affected families and take legal action against those responsible.
“We have learned a lesson from this incident, and the government is making immediate decisions to prevent such incidents from recurring,” he said. “The government was present from the beginning of the incident, but that was not enough. Citizens lost their lives and were injured due to gunfire by security personnel. Such harm caused by security personnel can never be treated as a normal matter.”
PM Shah said an investigation had already been initiated and assured that action would be taken in accordance with the law. “This government will ensure that people feel the presence of the state, and those found guilty will be held accountable,” he said.
He also stated that the government had conducted a serious review of all developments related to the Sunsari incident.
