Press freedom is backbone of democracy: Vice President

KATHMANDU: Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav has said that press freedom is essential for democracy and urged journalists to uphold truth and responsibility in the face of growing challenges from misinformation and digital platforms, while extending his best wishes on World Press Freedom Day.

In his message, he noted that media is no longer limited to print and broadcast platforms, as social media has significantly accelerated access to information.

However, he cautioned that algorithm-driven content can sometimes overshadow factual news and promote misleading information, posing challenges for both journalists and citizens in identifying truth, making informed decisions and ensuring responsible communication.

Vice President Yadav emphasized that press freedom, as guaranteed by the Constitution, is not only the right of journalists and media workers but also a fundamental right of all citizens to access truth, express opinions and make informed choices.

He further stated that Nepali journalists have demonstrated courage in exposing the truth even in difficult circumstances. However, he noted that economic pressure, political interference and the spread of misinformation on social media continue to challenge journalism, requiring it to become more responsible, organized and balanced.

He stressed that constitutional guarantees of press freedom serve as a guiding framework to address these challenges.

Reiterating that press freedom is a fundamental right enshrined in the Constitution of Nepal, the Vice President said a free press is the backbone of democracy. He expressed hope that journalism will continue to move forward fearlessly while fully exercising and protecting constitutional rights.
