KATHMANDU: Locals have demanded that the government provide compensation for land and physical structures acquired for the Birgunj Dry Port in Sirsiya, Birgunj.
The locals began an indefinite sit-in protest at the main gate of the dry port on Monday, saying that repeated discussions, negotiations and agreements with the concerned government agencies regarding compensation have not been implemented.
Ashok Kumar Chaudhary, chairperson of the Indefinite Sit-in Protest Struggle Committee formed to press for compensation, said they had been receiving assurances about compensation for the past 12 years but were forced to begin the protest after their demands remained unaddressed.
He said the sit-in would continue until their demands were addressed.
The movement of freight vehicles, including trucks and containers, has been affected after the protesters began their sit-in at the main gate of the dry port. The protest has also affected the dry port’s regular operations and transportation services related to imports and exports.
