Sita Jayanti being observed today

KATHMANDU: Sita Jayanti, observed annually on Baisakh Shukla Nawami, is being celebrated across the country today with devotion and worship dedicated to Goddess Sita.

According to Vedic scriptures and the Ramayana, Sita was born during the Treta Yuga when King Janaka of Mithila discovered her while ploughing a field. She is regarded as an incarnation of Goddess Laxmi and the consort of Lord Rama, the son of King Dasharath of Ayodhya.

Sita is revered as the embodiment of purity, devotion, and ideal womanhood. She accompanied Rama into exile and remained steadfast in her virtues even after being abducted by Rawan. Following Rama’s victory and return to Ayodhya, Sita later renounced royal life and went into exile while pregnant, choosing dignity amid public scrutiny.

She gave birth to her sons, Labh and Kush, in the ashram of sage Valmiki, where they were raised and educated. According to religious texts, when questions were again raised about her purity, Sita invoked Mother Earth and disappeared into it, symbolizing her divine origin and return.

Sita Jayanti is marked by special worship in Ram-Janaki temples across Nepal, with major celebrations held in Janakpur, the birthplace of Sita, where fairs and religious programs are organized.

The government has honored Sita as a National Limunary in recognition of her cultural and religious significance. Similarly, the Shree Ramchandra Temple Management Committee has organized celebrations, while a special worship program was held this morning at Sitapaila Temple in Kathmandu.
