Two women killed in family stabbing in Virginia, suspect shot dead by police

KATHMANDU: Two women of a Nepali-origin family were killed in a brutal stabbing incident in Fairfax County, Virginia, the United States, local media reported.

According to reports, 50-year-old Chhatra Bahadur Thapa fatally attacked his wife and daughter with a sharp weapon inside an apartment on Persimmon Drive in Virginia.

Police responded to the scene after receiving information about a domestic violence incident. Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis described the scene as “beyond imagination” and horrific, according to media reports.

At the time of the incident, 35-year-old Santosh Kumar Basnet, Thapa’s son-in-law, was outside clearing snow from his car. After hearing screams from inside the apartment, he called 911 and rushed in, where he found his 31-year-old wife Mamata Thapa and 51-year-old mother-in-law Binda Thapa critically injured.

After allegedly killing his wife and daughter, the suspect reportedly began attacking Basnet. Police said officers found Thapa assaulting Basnet upon arrival at the scene.

Authorities stated that after repeatedly ordering the suspect to drop the weapon, an officer opened fire when he failed to comply. Thapa was pronounced dead at the scene.

Binda and Mamata were declared dead, while Basnet sustained serious injuries and remains in critical condition, police said.

A one-year-old child present in the apartment was reported safe.

Preliminary investigation has found no prior criminal record or police complaints involving the family. Local authorities have launched further investigation to determine the motive behind the incident.
