Authorities warn against protests around TIA, cite security and election concerns

KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu District Administration Office (DAO) has warned that rallies, demonstrations, strikes and mass gatherings will not be permitted in and around the highly sensitive Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) area, stating that legal action will be taken against violators.

Chief District Officer Ishwor Raj Poudel said the administration has taken serious note of statements, notices and social media posts issued by certain groups and political parties regarding plans to stage demonstrations, rallies and gatherings at or near the airport on February 13.

He stated that no prior approval has been sought from the District Administration Office for such programs, as required under the Local Administration Act, 2028 BS.

The CDO further noted that with the election code of conduct currently in force, organizing such activities is prohibited. He also expressed concern over the possible infiltration of anti-election groups into such events.

In a statement, the administration said that in view of the upcoming elections and preparations for the Mahashivaratri festival, it is necessary to maintain order in the airport area.

The administration emphasized the need to ensure smooth movement of passengers traveling to and from the airport, facilitate transportation in surrounding areas and public roads, and conduct the festival in a dignified manner respecting religious and cultural sentiments.

The statement also warned against organizing or promoting any procession, demonstration, strike, rally or gathering that could obstruct public movement in the airport vicinity, including through social media incitement.

The administration has made it clear that anyone found involved in unlawful activities in restricted or sensitive areas will face action in accordance with prevailing laws.
