Direct voting to be held in Manang with three symbols

MANANG: Direct voting will be held in Manang district for the upcoming House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5, with voters choosing from just three party symbols.

According to the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, voters will cast their ballots for the Nepali Congress’ ‘tree’ symbol, the Nepali Communist Party’s ‘red star’, and the Mongol National Organization’s ‘rooster’.

Chief Electoral Officer Ram Prasad Poudel said the decision to limit the ballot to three symbols was taken after the CPN-UML and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) withdrew their candidacies in support of the Nepali Congress. “Of the five parties that initially fielded candidates, only three remain in the race after two parties pulled out,” he said.

Tek Bahadur Gurung of the Nepali Congress, Yashoda Subedi Gurung of the Nepal Communist Party, and Ram Bahadur Gurung of the Mongol National Organization are contesting the election.

Manang, which has a single House of Representatives constituency, has around 7,000 registered voters. The Himalayan district, known for having the lowest voter turnout in the country, has 29 polling stations, including one temporary station. A total of 171 staff have been deployed to conduct the election, the election office said.
