42 species of birds recorded in Narayani River area

NAWALPARASI: This year’s waterfowl census has shown a positive trend in the Narayani River area, with 42 bird species recorded, one more than last year, and a noticeable increase in overall bird numbers.

DB Chaudhary, Bird Census Coordinator of Chitwan National Park’s West Sector, said the total number of birds has also risen.

According to Chaudhary, experts counted 12,887 birds of 42 species this year in the Narayani River and surrounding wetlands, compared to 10,257 birds of 41 species in 2024. “This year, we have recorded one additional species and an overall increase in bird numbers,” he said.

Nepal has a total of 903 bird species, 162 of which are aquatic. This year’s census focused on five survey areas within Chitwan National Park and along the Narayani River towards Nawalparasi, including Sighrauli, Pithauli, Amaltari, and the Triveni Gandak Barrage.

The survey showed that migratory birds, arriving from Siberia and other northern regions to escape winter, were present in particularly large numbers this year. Chaudhary estimated that the overall bird population in the area increased by 3,339 compared to last year.
