CHITWAN: Nine rhinos have died in Chitwan National Park (CNP) and surrounding areas over the past six months, since July 17.
The deaths occurred within the park, adjoining community forests, and nearby areas. According to CNP Information Officer Avinas Thapa Magar, five male and three female rhinos have died during this period, while the sex of one rhino could not be identified.
Magar said that one rhino died due to electrocution, while the remaining deaths were caused by natural factors. The most recent death was reported on January 6, when a male rhino estimated to be around 35 years old was found dead in the Kumroj buffer zone community forest.
“It is believed that the rhino died during a fight with another rhino. Its horn and hooves were intact,” Magar said. He added that rhino deaths are reported every year due to various causes, including natural factors, electrocution, fighting among rhinos, and getting stuck in swamps. According to the latest census, there are currently 694 rhinos in Chitwan National Park.
