Nepali bowlers shine as foreign batters dominate NPL

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Premier League (NPL) has reached a competitive stage with 20 matches completed, revealing contrasting storylines in batting and bowling.

While Nepali players have dominated the bowling charts with consistent breakthroughs, foreign recruits have taken command of the batting leaderboard with two centuries recorded so far in the tournament.

Sudurpashchim Royals pacer Abinash Bohara has emerged as the tournament’s most successful bowler so far, picking up 11 wickets. His disciplined bowling at the death has meant his team is top of the table winning all their matches.

Following closely is Biratnagar Kings captain Sandeep Lamichhane, who has claimed 10 wickets. The star leg-spinner has been in top form, producing crucial breakthroughs in the middle overs.

With 10 wickets each, Kathmandu Gorkhas’ Milind Kumar and national team pacer Karan KC sit in the third and fourth positions, respectively, showcasing strong performances from bowlers across different franchises.

Sudurpashchim’s Harmeet Singh and Karnali Yaks’ Nandan Yadav are placed fifth and sixth with 9 wickets apiece, reflecting a strong showing by Nepali and foreign bowlers alike.

Foreign firepower dominates the batting lineup

While Nepali bowlers have excelled, the batting department has been led overwhelmingly by international players. Pokhara Avengers’ Adam Rossington tops the scoring chart with 253 runs, including a century he struck against Karnali Yaks on Tuesday.

Close behind is Karnali Yaks’ Mark Watt, who also scored a century, against Lumbini Lions, and has accumulated 242 runs so far. Despite Watt’s consistency Karnali’s other batters haven’t performed well as the team will miss out on the playoffs this year.

Chitwan Rhinos’ Ravi Bopara, a seasoned campaigner, sits in third place with 207 runs from five matches. His three half-centuries underline his reliability in the middle order.

Karnali’s Priyank Panchal holds the fourth spot with 181 runs, including two half-centuries, making him another foreign player who has adapted well to Nepali conditions.

The top Nepali batter on the list is national team captain Rohit Paudel of Lumbini Lions, who stands fifth with 174 runs. Paudel has shown resilience in the middle order, anchoring innings and keeping his team competitive despite inconsistent top-order support.
