Cabinet meeting taking place today

KATHMANDU: The Cabinet meeting is being held today at 2 pm at the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers’ Office, Singha Durbar.

Although Cabinet meetings are usually held on Mondays and Thursdays, this week’s meetings have been rescheduled to Tuesday and Thursday. The Monday session was postponed due to the Central Security Committee meeting held yesterday.

Today’s meeting is expected to decide on army mobilization. The Security Council, in its 41st meeting on Thursday, recommended that the Council of Ministers mobilize the army to ensure election security. The recommendation was made under Article 266 (1) of the Constitution to conduct the upcoming House of Representatives elections in a free, fair, and fear-free environment.

The House of Representatives elections are scheduled for March 5, 2026. The government is preparing army deployment with a focus on maintaining peace and security during the elections. The Integrated Election Security Plan-2082 has already been approved by the Central Security Committee. The Ministry of Home Affairs has communicated with the Security Council via the Ministry of Defense to recommend army mobilization.

The peace and security situation, disrupted by the Gen-Z movement on September 8 and 9, has not yet fully stabilized. Political parties have criticized the government for failing to provide a secure environment for elections.

Unlike previous elections, where the army was mobilized only a month in advance, this time the government plans to deploy the Nepali Army earlier due to the unusual security situation.
