DHARAN: Continuous rainfall since last Friday triggered flooding in the Sardu-Sera River, causing severe damage to the Jhumka Organic Farm located in Ramdhuni Municipality-8.
According to farm operator Bharat Karki, the flood resulted in losses exceeding Rs 8 million, with more than 200 pigs swept away by the rising waters.
Karki, who returned from Malaysia after three years and started the farm, said the facility spans around four bighas and employs 16 workers. At the time of the disaster, the farm housed over 300 pigs.
“On Saturday night, the flood hit suddenly after heavy rainfall. The pigs panicked and jumped over the pens into the river,” Karki said. “We were on the other side of the farm and couldn’t save them. Most were washed away—only a few survived, trapped near the gate and in nearby bushes.”
Among those lost were breeding sows, mature pigs ready for market, and over 40 piglets, all drowned or swept away by the torrent.
Fortunately, the farm’s poultry section, which houses around 30,000 chickens, was spared. Karki said the chicken sheds were located further from the river, out of the flood’s immediate path.
