Defiant of constitution and democratic system obstructing parliament: PM

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has asserted that the defiant of the Constitution and democratic system are obstructing the House sessions. Launching a book ‘Democracy and People’s Verdict: Electoral History of Nepal’ authored by former Chief Election Commissioner Surya Prasad Shrestha today, PM Oli dubbed the tendency to ruin the system being part of it as anarchic and anti-democratic. He was referring to the consistent obstruction and boycotting of the House of Representatives (HoR) by the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP).
He however admitted the need of fixing weaknesses seen in the process of the implementation of democratic system.

Bagmati Chief Minister Lama resigns following party directive

Bagmati Province Chief Minister Bahadur Singh Lama resigned from his post on Sunday, following a directive from Nepali Congress party president Sher Bahadur Deuba. Lama, who served as Chief Minister for one year and nine days since July 23, 2024, announced his resignation during a press conference held at the Office of the Chief Minister and Council of Ministers in the evening. In his address, Lama presented a summary of his administration’s progress, expressing pride in having served honestly throughout his tenure.

Prachanda targets Janardan: Mistakes need self-criticism

CPN (Maoist Centre) Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has said that those who defy party norms should engage in self-criticism. Speaking to reporters after Sunday’s Standing Committee meeting at Paris Danda, he was asked whether he himself would self-criticize. Prachanda replied, “No, that’s not the issue. It’s about those who make mistakes, there was discussion in the meeting about correcting them.” His comments come amid internal tensions with Deputy General Secretary Janardan Sharma, who has been leading a parallel ideological struggle within the party

Janardan blames Prachanda for party’s downfall, Karki proposes rotating leadership

Internal rifts within the CPN (Maoist Centre), the main opposition party, surfaced during the recent Standing Committee meeting, highlighting growing dissatisfaction with party leadership. As party chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ urged self-criticism from those defying party norms, Vice Chair Janardan Sharma ‘Prabhakar’ responded that he was ready to face any consequences for raising concerns about the party’s direction. In the meeting held on Sunday, Sharma pointed to the party’s sharp decline—from 3.1 million to just 1.1 million voters—and urged Prachanda to take responsibility for the downturn. He said leaders were privately declaring the party’s inability to return to its 2008 strength, which should prompt serious introspection.

Prachanda vows new rebellion

Maoist Centre Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has said that the country is in need of another revolution and a new form of rebellion. Speaking at a program at the party’s central office in Parisdanda on Sunday, Prachanda accused reactionary forces of ongoing conspiracies and emphasized the need for unity to resist them. Reflecting on his political journey—from the ‘People’s War’ to the peace process, the Constituent Assembly, and the present—Prachanda stated that he is prepared to wage another revolution.

Home Minister directs fresh CIB probe into Nirmala Pant case

Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has directed the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police to initiate a renewed and in-depth investigation into the rape and murder of Nirmala Pant in Bhimdatta Municipality, Kanchanpur. During an inspection visit to the CIB office on Sunday, Minister Lekhak instructed officers to leave no stone unturned in pursuing justice in the Pant case and to intensify investigations into all complex cases currently under the bureau’s jurisdiction. “I urge you to expedite investigations into the Nirmala Pant case and other complicated matters CIB is handling,” Lekhak said. “Public trust in CIB is growing within the police force, this confidence must be upheld through diligent work.”

UML leadership plans crackdown on internal dissent

CPN-UML Chairman and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has indicated a firm stance against internal dissent, warning leaders against defying party decisions. Speaking at a gathering of the UML Mass Organization Coordination Mechanism in Baluwatar on Saturday, Oli emphasized that mass organizations must act according to institutional decisions rather than individual opinions. “There should be no personal agenda. Organizations must follow the party’s collective decisions,” Oli said, addressing leaders of the UML’s 23 affiliated organizations.

Efforts to suppress dissent in UML: Crackdown on supporters of former President Bhandari

As discussions intensify within the CPN-UML regarding the possible leadership of former President Bidya Devi Bhandari, efforts appear to be underway to suppress her supporters. The UML’s central committee, in its meeting held on July 21–22, decided not to allow Bhandari to rejoin the party. Since then, leaders and cadres voicing support for her have come under increasing scrutiny. A series of actions have been taken against individuals within the party and its affiliated organizations who have expressed dissenting views or questioned the leadership of Chairman KP Sharma Oli.

Kaligandaki river flow at highest level this year

Continuous rainfall has pushed the Kaligandaki river to its highest level of the year, raising flood concerns in several settlements along its banks. According to gauge reader Krishna Prasad Subedi, the river reached a height of 6.4 meters above the riverbed this morning — the highest measurement so far this year. Heavy rainfall in the upstream districts of Mustang, Myagdi, Baglung, and Parbat contributed to the surge. Subedi noted the flow may begin to recede as rainfall has stopped.

NWA demands immediate withdrawal of proposed law legalizing polygamy

The Nepal Women Association (NWA) has drawn the attention of the government to withdraw the proposed law that would legalize polygamy in certain circumstances. Submitting a memorandum to Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Ajay Kumar Chaurasiya, the Association urged the Minister to immediately take back the proposed law to that end. Terming the proposed legal provision as irresponsible, regressive and objectionable, the NWA said it would ruin the hard-earned achievements in the area of women rights and restore a practice of polygamy.

Passenger bus plunges off cliff near Aanbukhaireni, Tanahun

A passenger bus has veered off the road and plunged down a slope from Aina Paharo along the Muglin–Pokhara highway, near Aanbukhaireni in Tanahun. According to police, the bus (registration number Ga 2 Kha 1077), en route from Gorkha to Narayangadh, fell approximately 50 meters down the hillside, coming to a stop just short of the Marshyangdi River. Two passengers have sustained serious injuries, while three others were slightly injured.

Emphasis on improving traffic management in Kathmandu Valley

Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Devendra Dahal, has stressed the urgent need to make traffic management in the Kathmandu Valley more effective and user-friendly, given the Valley’s importance as the federal capital and a hub of cultural diversity. Speaking at a stakeholder meeting on the Strategic Environmental Assessment of the Kathmandu Valley Urban Transport System Master Plan Project held in Lalitpur on Saturday, Minister Dahal expressed concern over the disorganized state of the Valley’s transport system despite its central role in Nepal’s economic, cultural, and administrative landscape. Dahal noted that although a transport management master plan was introduced in 2012 and later updated in 2017, there has been little visible progress. Instead, the situation has deteriorated, with rising vehicle numbers, haphazard urban development, and a lack of infrastructure contributing to severe traffic congestion, delays, and worsening air pollution. These issues, he said, are not only disrupting mobility but also harming economic productivity and public health.

Electricity reaches nearly 900 new households in Myagdi

Around 900 households in Myagdi district have gained access to electricity from the central transmission line over the past fiscal year. According to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Myagdi Distribution Center, 874 new consumers were connected to the grid during fiscal year 2025/25. Center Chief Satyanarayan Gami stated that electrification has been successfully completed in Patle, Lupsipar, and Ghyanglepani of Malika Rural Municipality-3; Chiuribot of Ward No. 4; and Bul and Malampar of Dhawalagiri Rural Municipality.

Floods and landslides block 7 major roads across the country

Seven major roads across the country have been completely blocked due to floods and landslides triggered by continuous rainfall, according to the Nepal Police Headquarters. As of Sunday afternoon, vehicle movement has been halted on these highways, while another seven roads are operating with one-way traffic. Roads that have been fully blocked include the Koshi Highway in Bhotkhola Rural Municipality of Sankhuwasabha; the Nepal–China border bridge and Pasang Lhamu Highway in Gosainkunda Rural Municipality of Rasuwa; the Shahid Highway in Pariwartan Rural Municipality of Rolpa; the Jajarkot–Dolpa–Bheri Corridor in Aathbiskot Rural Municipality-1 of Rukum West; the Karnali Corridor in Jumla; and the Dolpa Road in Jajarkot.

Landslides block Kaligandaki Corridor and Ridi–Wami Taksar road in Gulmi

Continuous rainfall since last night has blocked two key roads in Gulmi district: the Kaligandaki Corridor and the Ridi–Wami Taksar road section. According to the District Police Office, a massive landslide accompanied by large boulders occurred this afternoon at Gargare in Kaligandaki Rural Municipality-1, completely obstructing the Kaligandaki Corridor. Similarly, the Ridi–Wami Taksar road, one of the district’s main routes, has also been blocked due to a rise in water levels in the Dahare River in Satyawati Rural Municipality-6. Deputy Superintendent of Police and District Police Office Information Officer Ganga Bahadur Saru confirmed that the flooding in both the Dahare and Ledo rivers has made the road impassable.

NEPSE suffers sharp decline amid ongoing economic concerns

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE), which had seen a recent surge following monetary policy easing despite little improvement in the broader economy, experienced a sharp drop in trading on Sunday, the first trading day of the week. The NEPSE index plummeted by 63.73 points, with a total turnover of Rs 13.75 billion. Out of the traded companies, share prices of 233 firms declined, while only 16 companies saw gains. As a result of the sharp downturn, market capitalization dropped by 2.18 percent.

Two arrested with heroin in Saptari after police fire aerial shots

Police arrested two individuals with heroin in Barahibirpur, Chhinnamasta Rural Municipality-1, Saptari, on Sunday after firing aerial shots to stop them from fleeing.Acting on a confidential tip-off, a team from the District Police Office, Saptari, deployed to the area and fired two warning shots in the air before apprehending the suspects. The arrested individuals have been identified as Bishal Raya of Badibirpur, Chhinnamasta Rural Municipality-1, and Manoj Raya of Dakneshwari Municipality-7.

Deepak Chapagain’s exemplary lemon farming in Nawalparasi

The slopes of Singchang are now flourishing with lemon trees, blooming and bearing fruit. Deepak Chapagain of Devchuli, who spent many years working in Malaysia, has returned home and is now busy harvesting lemons and sending them to market. After years of hard work abroad to support his family, Chapagain is turning to agriculture for his future in Nepal. Chapagain manages an 80-ropani lemon orchard in Singchang, Bulingtar Rural Municipality-4, Nawalparasi East. The project began five years ago when he and Devi Prasad Bhusal of Devchuli planted two thousand lemon trees together to share investment and management responsibilities. While initial production was modest, the orchard is now yielding substantial harvests.

Grade 12 results to be published this week

The results of the Grade 12 examinations are set to be released within the next few days. The National Examination Board (NEB) is preparing to publish the results for the academic year 2081 this week. Board Chairperson Mahashram Sharma stated that the results will be made public within three to four days. “We are preparing to announce the Grade 12 results within three to four days,” Sharma said. “Efforts are underway to publish the results as soon as possible.”

Youth dies after truck hits scooter; woman injured

A young man died in a scooter accident on Saturday at Bhanpath Chowk, East-West Highway in Bardibas-10, Mahottari. According to the Area Police Office, Bardibas, the 38-year-old scooter driver from Lalbandi-9, Sarlahi, was struck by a truck (registration Na.2-03-001 Kha 6461) traveling west to east while riding a scooter (registration Na.2-08 Pa 6834). Acharya, who was seriously injured in the collision, died during treatment at Shubhaswastik Hospital in Bardibas.
