Nepal’s exports surge by over 81% in FY 2024/25

Imports and foreign trade also rise, deepening long-standing trade imbalance.

KATHMANDU: Nepal recorded a remarkable surge in exports in the last fiscal year 2024/25, with outbound trade rising by 81.80 percent compared to the previous year, according to data released by the Department of Customs.

The country exported goods worth Rs 277.03 billion in FY 2024/25, a significant jump from Rs 152.38 billion in FY 2023/24.

Total foreign trade, which includes both imports and exports, reached Rs 2.81 trillion, up by 19.24 percent from the previous year’s figure of Rs 1.74 trillion.

Despite the notable rise in exports, Nepal’s imports also increased. The country imported goods worth Rs 1.80 trillion in the last fiscal year, up from Rs 1.59 trillion in the previous year — an increase of 13.25 percent.

As a result, Nepal’s trade deficit widened further, crossing the Rs 1.5 trillion mark. The Department reported a trade deficit of Rs 1.52 trillion as of the end of Asar (mid-July 2024), which is about 6 percent higher than the previous year’s deficit of Rs 1.44 trillion.
