Meritocracy key for NRB governor: PM Oli

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has stressed that the vacant post of the Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank should be filled on the basis of merit rather than personal or political proximity.

Speaking at the formal inauguration of the Former Planners Forum Nepal, PM Oli stated, “I do not want to bring anyone into the Nepal Rastra Bank based on personal ties. I want capable individuals who can do the job well. The country will progress if merit-based appointments are prioritized.”

Acknowledging the broader political context, PM Oli added, “Although I am the Prime Minister, I am not the only one in the government. That’s why I give importance to meritocracy as much as possible.”

Highlighting recent appointments, he pointed out that individuals recommended by the official recommendation committee—rather than political connections—were selected as chairpersons and members of both the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission for the Investigation of Enforced Disappearances.

He clarified that he has no personal relationship with any of the appointees, except one whom he knew from his time as Chief Secretary.

Wishing the newly formed Former Planners Forum Nepal success, PM Oli encouraged the body to become a space for knowledge-sharing and collaboration, calling for unity and sustainability within the organization.
