NHRC urges protection of journalists and press freedom

KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called on the government to uphold and protect freedom of expression and press freedom.

In a statement issued on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day today, the NHRC urged the government and all concerned stakeholders to fully respect these freedoms as guaranteed by Nepal’s constitution, national laws, and international human rights instruments.

The commission emphasized that the safety and security of journalists must be treated as a priority.

Expressing sorrow over recent incidents, the NHRC mentioned the death of journalist Suresh Rajak, who died in a fire during a protest in Tinkune, Kathmandu on March 28, and the injury sustained by journalist Sabina Karki while covering a teachers’ protest.

The Commission stressed the urgent need for measures to prevent such tragedies and ensure a safe environment for media professionals.
