No threat to republic: Prachanda

KATHMANDU: Maoist Center Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has said there is no immediate threat to the republic, downplaying recent calls for political parties to unite in its defense.

Speaking to reporters at Biratnagar Airport on Sunday, Dahal clarified that the country’s republican system is not under any serious danger.

“There is no need to assume the republic is at risk right now,” he said, adding, “there are no differences between parties regarding the issue of the republic.”

His comments come in response to recent remarks by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who characterized a meeting with Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and Dahal in Baluwatar as a crucial step toward safeguarding the political system.

“Important consultations were held with top leaders to protect the current political system and the constitution,” Oli had said, emphasizing the need for unity among all political forces.

Dahal, however, appeared to reject that interpretation. While acknowledging that dialogue among major parties is important, he stated that the claim of the republic being in jeopardy was exaggerated.

Addressing questions about future political alignments, Dahal also clarified that the Maoist Center would not support any government that disregards the constitution or attempts to shield corruption.

“Supporting the current alliance unconditionally goes against the spirit of the constitution,” he said.

He also remarked on the return of former President and Vice President to political life, saying it was their constitutional right. Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun has resumed party responsibilities after expressing interest in being politically active, Dahal confirmed.
