KATHMANDU: The Nepal Teachers Federation has announced it will continue its Kathmandu-centric protest today, citing the government’s failure to address key demands despite high-level meetings.
Federation President Laxmi Kishore Subedi, who met with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Friday night, stated that the situation still demands continued protest.
“We are not here to return after settling one or two minor issues,” Subedi said, emphasizing that the protest is aimed at securing a broader resolution, including the implementation of past agreements.
During the two-hour meeting held after 9 pm on Friday, the NTF leadership, including Co-Chairperson Nanumaya Parajuli, General Secretary Tula Bahadur Thapa, and Deputy Secretary General Madanraj Joshi, presented their concerns regarding the ongoing agitation, the long-awaited School Education Act, and the rights of teachers and school employees.
Subedi noted that while the Prime Minister discussed issues the government could potentially address and expressed readiness to move forward with the Act, no concrete commitment was made.
“The situation is not yet positive,” he said, urging all teachers and education workers to remain disciplined, dignified, and united in the protest.
Subedi also stressed that all gains made by educators in the past were won through strong and sustained movements.
“There is no alternative to the movement now,” he said.
In a separate meeting on Friday night, the NTF delegation also held talks with Speaker Devraj Ghimire to discuss measures for expediting the School Education Bill.
Subedi has pledged to share the details of his discussions with the Prime Minister during today’s protest gathering. The Federation is expected to continue pressing for structural reforms and policy commitments as demonstrations persist in the capital.
