JANAKPURDHAM: Stakeholders have emphasized the importance of effective coordination and collaboration among all three levels of government to conserve the Chure region.

During a discussion held in Janakpurdham, Raj Kumar Lekhi, Minister for Communications and Law at the province, highlighted that water sources in Madhes districts are drying up due to the degradation of the Chure.

He stressed the need for coordinated efforts across all government tiers to restore the Chure environment.

Lekhi also underscored the urgency of adopting meaningful climate action to address the adverse impacts of climate change.

Uddhav Prasad Rijal, Secretary of the Ministry, noted the irregular weather patterns observed this year, including a decline in cold spells and a lack of rainfall during winter.

He warned that the dry season could lead to an increase in fire incidents if these trends continue.

Rijal called for cooperation from all parties to implement effective climate action, stating that climate change is a major factor in the deterioration of the Chure region.

Environmentalist Madhusudan Gautam presented a study report on climate change adaptation and disaster risk management in Madhes districts.

He pointed out the region’s lack of preparedness to cope with natural disasters.

Archana Shrestha, Deputy Director General of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, reminded the audience that the Department had regularly forecasted weather patterns, which helped minimize losses in lives and property.

She added that the Department was expanding its operations in Madhes.

Dr. Shila Mishra, Member of the Province Policy and Planning Commission in Madhes, emphasized that Madhes is at the forefront of climate change and requires collective efforts to find solutions.
