Protesters appeal Trump to liberate Hong Kong

HONG KONG: Protestors in Hong Kong on Sunday urged U. S. President Donald Trump to ‘liberate’ Hong Kong, a city ruled by China.

They also sang the Star-Spangled Banner and chanted slogans such as “fight for freedom, stand with Hong Kong,” as they handed over petitions at the U.S. Consulate.

They continued to say: ‘Resist Beijing, liberate Hong Kong.’

Hong Kong police stood by waved the flags with Stars and Stripes and placards demanding democracy.

U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper had on Saturday urged China to exercise maximum restraint in Hong Kong.

Today’s protest remained peaceful as Hong Kong did not take any steps to thwart the protestors. Earlier, police had responded to violence with water cannon, rubber bullets and tear gas.

The police, however, cleared the Central MTR metro station where protestors smashed a long glass panel at a station entrance.

US President Trump, last month, suggested that China needs to ‘humanely’ settle the problem before a trade deal is reached with the United States. (Agencies)
