KATHMANDU: Spokesperson of the ruling Nepali Congress, Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat, has stated that Rabi Lamichhane, chair of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), has not been declared innocent despite being released on bail by the Kaski District Court.
Speaking at the foundation stone-laying ceremony for Nepal’s second three-way suspension bridge at the confluence of the Suryamati and Hemwati rivers in Nuwakot, Mahat criticized Lamichhane’s supporters for their celebratory narrative following his release.
“Why was a bail amount of Rs 65 lakh set? If there were no issues, the court wouldn’t have demanded bail,” questioned Mahat, who also served as a former finance minister.
He argued that the court’s decision to impose bail suggests that there is evidence requiring further scrutiny.
Mahat further elaborated that if the government’s case against Lamichhane was baseless, the court would have dismissed it outright.
“The bail implies there is a problem. The court hasn’t declared him innocent. The case is still ongoing, and the bail merely allows temporary freedom,” he asserted.
