Govt will not take loans under BRI: Minister Gurung

KAVREPALANCHOWK: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has clarified that the government will not take loans under the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

He emphasized that while the government will avoid loans, it may enter into grant agreements during Prime Minister KP Oli’s upcoming visit to China next week.

Speaking at an event in Dhulikhel today, Minister Gurung stated, “There are differing opinions on whether to implement the BRI, but it is not that the government will immediately enter into a BRI agreement. Since the MoU has been signed, it should be implemented.”

He reiterated that the government’s policy is not to take loans from any source.

“We will not take loans, but we are open to accepting grants. If China offers a grant, we will consider it, and an agreement can be reached accordingly.”

Minister Gurung acknowledged that there are differing views on the BRI but pointed out, “Countries that have signed agreements on BRI projects are benefiting, with many of these projects being implemented as ‘game changers’ for their economies.”

He also stressed that the current government is committed to strengthening democracy and improving the welfare of its citizens, focusing on development and construction initiatives.

The minister explained that resolving issues arising from delayed development projects is part of the government’s responsibility.

He noted that some delays have been caused by disagreements between ministries.
