Afghanistan seeks UN’s intervention in Pak’s military violations along its border



KATHMANDU: The Afghanistan government has called on the United Nations to intervene in the ongoing “provocative activities” along its border areas by the Pakistan’s military.

In a letter to the Security Council issued on August 22, the Afghanistan government strongly condemned the Pakistani military violations and reiterated its call on the UN body to take necessary measures to cease such illegal and provocative activities.

Already ravaged by more than a decade-long civil war, the Afghanistan government  in the letter has charged that the Pakistani Army has constructed military posts and barriers in its territory, fired 200 rockets in Sheltan district of Kunar Province on August 19 and 20 and violated airspace of Afghanistan, resulting in the destruction of residential property and displacement of local population.

The military violations have continued despite repeated communications and appeals to made to the government of Pakistan, reads the letter.

The Afghanistan government in the letter has lashed out at the Pakistan government for its failure to adhere to its obligations of the principles of the UN Charter including Article 2, as well as international law and international humanitarian law.
