KANCHANPUR: Local governments in Kanchanpur have begun temporarily closing schools due to rising temperatures and growing health concerns among students.
Several municipalities have announced short-term school closures, which will later be adjusted with the regular summer vacation schedule.
Bhimdatta Municipality has suspended classes at all institutional and community schools within the municipality for three days starting today. According to Hari Dutta Joshi, chief of the municipality’s education section, the decision was taken considering the possible health risks posed to students by extreme heat conditions.
Similarly, Krishnapur Municipality has also declared a three-day holiday for all schools beginning today.
Shuklaphanta Municipality is also preparing to close schools for a few days. Tikendra Raj Bhatta, chief of the municipality’s education section, said the local authority is closely monitoring weather conditions and their potential impact on students’ health.
Teachers said many students have been complaining of headaches, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating in classrooms due to the excessive heat.
“On one hand, not all classrooms have fans, and even the available fans are not functioning properly. On the other hand, many classrooms are roofed with corrugated zinc sheets, making teaching and learning activities extremely uncomfortable for both students and teachers,” a teacher said. Daytime temperatures in Kanchanpur and neighboring Kailali districts have exceeded 40 degrees Celsius.
