Pakistani Ambassador stresses revitalization of SAARC for South Asian prosperity

KATHMANDU: Pakistan’s Ambassador to Nepal, Abrar H Hashmi, has called for revitalizing the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) to enhance the prosperity of South Asia.

Speaking at an event in Kathmandu today, Ambassador Hashmi emphasized that SAARC, established to improve the living standards in the region through cooperative efforts, should not be allowed to become inactive.

He highlighted that SAARC’s primary goals include fostering peace in South Asia, promoting mutual assistance across economic, social, cultural, technical, and scientific fields.

The Ambassador stressed the importance of reactivating SAARC to achieve these objectives.

Ambassador Hashmi proposed that SAARC could be rejuvenated through efforts in economic growth, social progress, and cultural development, as well as by expanding mutual trust and cooperation.

He also suggested strengthening collaboration on international platforms and partnering with other international and regional organizations with similar goals.

Addressing concerns about the delayed 19th SAARC summit, which was initially scheduled for November 9 and 10, 2016, in Islamabad but has yet to be held, Ambassador Hashmi assured that Pakistan is prepared to host the conference.

“We are ready to successfully hold the summit meeting and will complete all necessary preparations within two months once we receive confirmation from the current president country, Nepal,” he said.
