KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress, the main opposition party, has pointed fingers at Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire, holding him accountable for the parliamentary chaos.

The party alleges that Speaker Ghimire is favoring certain parties’ interests.

These accusations emerged after Speaker Ghimire allocated time for Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane to address queries raised against him by the Nepali Congress.

The party has persistently demanded the formation of a parliamentary committee to investigate Minister Lamichhane’s alleged involvement in a cooperative fraud case.

Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat, the party’s spokesperson, criticized Speaker Ghimire’s handling of the situation, stating, “Speaker Ghimire attempted to proceed with the session disregarding our protests and demands.”

Dr. Mahat further emphasized that the Speaker, entrusted with safeguarding and advancing parliamentary norms, is instead aligning with partisan interests.

The tension escalated when Speaker Ghimire granted Minister Lamichhane the floor, leading to a heated exchange between CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli and Vice President Dhan Raj Gurung.

This exchange ultimately resulted in a scuffle between lawmakers from the two parties within the parliament.
