CIAA files corruption case against 32 people, including former Minister Jeevan Shahi

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed a corruption case against 32 people allegedly involved in the procurement of two wide-body aircraft for Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) in the past. The case, lodged at the Special Court, seeks compensation of Rs 1.47 billion. Those implicated in the case include former Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, Jeevan Bahadur Shahi, NAC’s former Managing Director NAC, Sugat Ratna Kansakar, former Secretaries Shankar Adhikari and Shishir Kumar Dhungana, along with Joint Secretary Buddhi Sagar Lamichhane.

PM Dahal prioritizes legal amendments to boost foreign investment

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has emphasized the government’s commitment to prioritize legal amendments aimed at attracting foreign investment. Addressing the 57th meeting of the Investment Board Nepal on Thursday, Prime Minister Dahal, also the Board Chair, highlighted the importance of legal reforms to facilitate both domestic and foreign investment in Nepal’s infrastructure and service sectors. He stressed the necessity of sending a clear message to the international community that Nepal is conducive to investment.

JSP Nepal nominates Hasina Khan as lawmaker under proportional representation

Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Nepal has put forward Hasina Khan from Banke as the party’s nominee for lawmaker under the proportional representation quota. The position became available following the passing of Manju Sharma Ansari, who previously held the seat through the same quota. This recommendation was decided during the central work execution committee meeting held at the party’s central office in Balkumari, Lalitpur this morning.

Gold price hits new peak: Reaches Rs 134,000 per tola

Gold prices have soared to a new record, with fine gold reaching Rs 134,000 per tola on Thursday. The surge of Rs 1,000 per tola comes in the wake of Wednesday’s already record-breaking spike. According to the Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, the price of fine gold has been fixed at Rs 134,000 per tola and standard gold is traded at Rs 133,350 per tola.

By-Elections 2024: Ilam and Bajhang voter counts revealed

With the by-elections slated for April 27, the Election Commission (EC) has unveiled the definitive voter roll for the impending polls. In a recent session held on Thursday, the Commission greenlit the final voter list, now accessible on the EC’s official website. According to EC Spokesperson Shaligram Sharma Poudel, Ilam’s electoral constituency number 2 boasts 115,889 eligible voters, while Bajhang’s constituency number 1 tallies 61,748 voters for the upcoming electoral showdown.

Nepali Congress nominates Khadka for Ilam-2, Singh for Bhajang-1 by-elections

Nepali Congress (NC), the leading opposition party, has selected Dambar Khadka as its candidate for the Ilam-2 constituency and Abhishek Singh for Bhajang-1. The by-elections in these constituencies are slated for April 27. Khadka, who contested in the 2079 elections, faced defeat against CPN-UML’s Subash Chandra Nembang. Singh is the son of the late minister of Sudurpaschim Province, Prithvi Bahadur Singh.

Maoist Center extends support to CPN-UML candidate for Ilam-2 by-election

The CPN (Maoist Center) has declared its backing for the CPN-UML candidate in the upcoming Ilam-2 by-election. Suhang Nembang, the son of the late Subhash Nembang, has been nominated as the CPN-UML candidate for Ilam-2. As a result of the Maoist Center’s decision, Dhirendra Sharma’s candidacy is set to be withdrawn in favor of supporting the CPN-UML.

NEPSE sees minor dip, marks 2.73-point drop today

Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) experienced a slight decline of 2.73 points on Thursday, marking the conclusion of the week’s trading. The NEPSE index closed at 2004.05 points by the end of the trading session. With 69,63,359 shares of 302 companies being exchanged 56,321 times, NEPSE recorded a total turnover of Rs 3,037,267,307.

Singer Rajesh Payal Rai released after Kathmandu arrest

Renowned singer Rajesh Payal Rai has been released from custody after his arrest in Kathmandu last night. The police reported that Rai, along with two others, was apprehended for causing disturbances and consuming alcohol. The arrest took place near Madan Bhandari College in Kathmandu following complaints from local residents regarding noise and disruption.

Kathmandu ranks second most polluted city worldwide

The air quality in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, has reached concerning levels, with PM2.5 levels hitting 184 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m3) as of 7:45 am this morning, based on data from IQ AirVisual. This places Kathmandu as the second most polluted city globally. The current PM2.5 concentration is 24 times higher than the annual air quality guideline value set by the World Health Organization (WHO).
