KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) Vice President, Dhanraj Gurung, expressed concerns about the potential rise of crony capitalism during the party’s ongoing Mahasamiti meeting.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Mahasamiti meeting, Gurung pointed out that the influence of crony capitalism has led to the perception of politicians resembling businessmen, and vice versa.

“We have seen leaders behaving like businessmen and businessmen behaving like leaders due to crony capitalism. Therefore, we must have a strong voice against crony capitalism in the Mahasamiti meeting,” he stated.

Gurung emphasized that the Mahasamiti meeting should take a unified stance against crony capitalism, which, in his view, has hindered the establishment of genuine economic governance.

“The inability to establish genuine economic governance is corruption itself,” Gurung asserted. “As long as corruption persists, the underprivileged cannot become prosperous. You cannot lift a person from poverty by transforming a hut into a palace. And sitting in a tent cannot bring a person on the rooftop. It’s not possible.”

Gurung also highlighted how crony capitalism prevents the effective implementation of economic policies that could benefit the common man.

“Until we eradicate corruption, we cannot make the poor prosperous. Crony capitalism does not allow us to implement policies that could uplift the poor,” he added.
