Eight more bodies recovered from Himlung avalanche

MANANG: The bodies of eight more climbers who had been missing following an avalanche on Mount Himlung in Narpa Bhumi Rural Municipality-5, Manang, have been recovered.

With the recovery of the eight bodies, the number of climbers killed in the avalanche that occurred on Ashoj 11 has reached 15. Four bodies were recovered on Thursday morning and four more in the afternoon, according to Assistant Chief District Officer Krishna Prasad Paudel.

Seven bodies had been recovered earlier. One person remains missing following the Himlung avalanche.

“Two bodies have been brought to the district headquarters in Chame, while six have been taken to Phu village,” Paudel said. “It is already dark, so helicopters cannot fly. We will bring the remaining bodies on Friday.”

The bodies were brought by a Nepal Army helicopter on Thursday. A Nepal Army team, in coordination with locals and other security agencies, is also working to clear the Marsyangdi River, which was blocked by a landslide at Thado Khola in Chame Rural Municipality-4, and restore the disrupted electricity transmission line.

The avalanche struck the mountain’s base camp on the morning of Ashoj 11. The Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA) has deployed an 11-member specialised search and rescue team to the area.
